The white Miniature Schnauzer has been part of the breed since the Miniature was developed with some of the dogs going into the breed's development reported as being white. The FCI recognised the colour in the 1950s and the English Kennel Club and the Australian National Kennel Council followed suit sometime later.
Neither the Canadian nor the American Kennel Clubs recognise white as an acceptable colour. We have been told that it is because the Miniature is a smaller version of the Schnauzer, and neither the Schnauzer nor the Giant Schnauzer are allowed to be white. While this has an air of truth about it, this explanation ignores the fact that the American Kennel Club accepts black and silver Miniatures.
Regardless of the reason, every country except the USA and Canada accepts whites.
In Australia, four colours are allowed. Whilst the black is required to be “pure” black the white is simply “white”, this allows for the very slight champagne overlay that goes with the desired strong pigmentation. Because the white is rare and because of the strong view in North America that there is no such thing as a white Miniature Schnauzer, showing them can be a challenge. Despite that we have had incredible success showing Aust Ch Edelgeist Rainbow Connection, the famous “Dillon”. Dillon has had some amazing wins, mainly under Asian and European judges, or judges with a lot of experience in those regions.
